Information on Malignant Mesothelioma and its Treatment

By Mike Martin

Malignant mesothelioma is a disease that is fatal; there is no cure, only life-prolonging treatments. Malignant mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is used for its heat resistance in insulation. Its other properties make it popular in other industrial products. Malignant mesothelioma can lie dormant in a person for forty plus years. If you were exposed to asbestos at any time in the past, you have a risk of developing this debilitating disease.

Malignant mesothelioma is caused by cancerous cells growing in the pleura, which is the lining of the chest cavity, or the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity. This disease is known to have the following symptoms: persistent coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Symptoms also include difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Experiencing any of these symptoms should alert you to see a doctor, especially if you have knowingly been exposed to asbestos. Early detection can open doors to more productive treatments.

One treatment option for malignant mesothelioma sufferers is surgery. Surgery can be done to remove an infected lung when an individual has pleural mesothelioma. Palliative surgery options are also available to help alleviate pain and other symptoms. If surgery is not an option, a doctor may try chemotherapy; chemotherapy is where a battery of chemicals is used to kill the cancer. Sometime doctors will also use radiation treatment in addition to the chemotherapy to try to eradicate cancer from the body. Any of these treatments can be used, depending on how far along the cancer has progressed.

Malignant mesothelioma sufferers are also exploring alternative cancer treatments, such as natural treatments. Natural treatments include detoxification, which seeks to eliminate harmful toxins from the body, and enzyme therapy, which adds beneficial enzymes to the body. Another alternative treatment, used in addition to medicinal treatment, is psychological therapy. Psychological methods seek to use mind over matter against the cancer; it emphasizes keeping a positive mental attitude.
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare disease that affects those who have been exposed to asbestos. It can cause a number of symptoms and is not curable. Getting early treatment is really the only way to prolong your life.
