#1 Tip When Hitting the Heavy Bag For the First Time

DON'T hit the heavy bag on your first day...OK, well that may be taking it to the extreme, but if you have never hit a heavy bag before, proceed with caution. I think the tendency is to initially try to hit the bag as hard as you can. I put the gloves on for the first time with a couple friends, and I think I was trying to impress them with my punching power, so I really let loose. This was a big mistake, especially the next day. (You will feel pain in muscles that you didn't even think you were using when you punched the bag.) So my tips would be as follows:

* Wrap your hands (including knuckles, hands, and wrists)! This is probably the most important first step. And make sure you wrap them correctly. There are plenty of websites that explain how to wrap, or I would also suggest checking out YouTube. There are several good videos that explain various wrapping techniques, so choose the one that you are most comfortable with.

* Along the same line, make sure you get the right size wraps. I started with some wraps that were given to me for free. The problem was they were only 108 inches, which are really too small for my hands and do not allow for proper coverage of my hands and knuckles.

* Warm up. Jump some rope. Do some jumping jacks. Run on the treadmill. Do some push-ups. Or shadow box. But make sure you are warm and loose before you start beating on the bag or you might pull or strain a muscle.

* Make sure you know proper punching form before you start wailing on the bag as hard as you can. Many people make the mistake of punching with the wrong part of their hand and this can lead to injury. (I learned from my mistakes.) Again, YouTube has many great videos with expert advice on how to throw a various punches. The heavy bag is great for working on your jab, cross, hooks, and uppercuts, as well as good for practicing your footwork.

* And I guess, something I have already eluded to, don't punch as hard as you can on the first day, or not even for the first week. Start easy and light. Learn the technique and let your body get used to the new muscles that are being used. You will thank yourself in the morning and in the future. You hands are you most important tool when boxing, so do not ruin them on a rock hard heavy bag just because you started out too quickly and without the proper knowledge.

Good luck. Have fun. It's a great workout.
